As you know, I’m an advocate for ‘Home is where the heart is’.
And what could be better than learning about and embracing the places that others call Home? The summer isn’t yet over and if you’re still contemplating a trip, allow me to convince you to make those plans…
I live and work in London, a brilliant bustling hub of a city that sets an example when it comes to vibrant cultures co-existing and influencing one another. So I love to travel to countries where I can be fully immersed in the cultures I have only a ‘taster’ of in London - and I do mean that literally, this city has such a wonderful range of authentic world cuisines! It’s not only the foods, but the lifestyle, the practices, architecture, natural landscapes… so many aspects to take in when travelling.
I highly recommend allowing yourself to be inspired by different environments and experiences - it’s always an education. Observing a different way of life is to humble yourself and widen your conversation with understanding.
Disrupting your normal routine from time to time really is beneficial to mental health. Especially if you’ve been stuck in a rut with negative or anxious thought patterns, bad habits or general ‘life fatigue’. Travel lifts you from your day-to-day life, and the exposure to new surroundings can be a helpful kick-start to a new outlook. Something as simple as marvelling at a sunset over beautiful scenery can bring back a sense of centre and perspective.
Travel can be a wonderful means of stepping outside of your comfort zone too, to feel the exhilaration and sense of achievement that we CAN exist outside of what we know. Perhaps travelling solo is something that sounds like a challenge, in which case: take a leap and try it. Or perhaps the lifestyle in a certain place is a far cry from anything familiar to you, so why not bravely embrace it! When we push ourselves into the unknown it helps us to grow as individuals, and for the most part results in hugely rewarding discoveries.
Lastly, remember to take the pressure off yourself when travelling. After all, a perfectly executed itinerary somewhat misses the point… to quote a famous African proverb: ’To get lost is to learn the way’…
